Amroth

Amroth

Weather: Cold and overcast in the morning, clearing and sunny in the afternoon.
Accommodation: Mellieha Guest House, Amroth.

It has been a day of getting to our accommodation, settling-in and readying ourselves for the Pembrokeshire Coastline Walk, a distance of 300 kms from Amroth to St Dogmael. Our friend, Neil O'Brien made his way from Cardiff by train to Carmarthen where Henk, Henk's brother John and I picked him up in our hire car.

We were only 25kms away from Amroth which is the start of the walk. We dropped off our luggage at the Amroth B&B and the four of us returned the hire car to Pembroke Dock thirty kilometres away. We then walked two kilometres to the train station and bought tickets to Kilgetty which is the nearest station to Amroth.

As it was lunchtime we made a quick dash into "The Cozy Cafe" for a quick coffee and a bite to eat before the 1.00pm train. The cafe lived up to its name and we felt snug inside. It was a scenic forty minute train journey overlooking farmland to Kilgetty Station. We walked four kilometres from the station to our B&B and it was good to see that the afternoon weather had improved and the sun had started to peak through the clouds warming things up significantly.

The weather over the past few days has been very cold with intermittent rain. The forecast for the week seems to be improving with slightly higher temperatures with little or no rain. We hope this is the case or we are in for a very cold walk. Still, we have all the gear for all walking conditions and it's all part of the experience.

On our arrival our B&B host made us two large pots of tea and served Welsh Cakes in the conservatory. The B&B is high on a cliff overlooking the sea and we had lovely views from the conservatory.

The start of the walk is twenty minutes from our B&B going east and our walk goes west. To save time tomorrow our experienced B&B host, Julie, suggested that we complete the twenty minute walk along the esplanade to the start line, have dinner at the nearby 16th century pub called The New Inn and then return to the B&B. This we did and tomorrow we only need to walk a short distance up the road to meet the path and continue on our way.

The tide was a long way out and the beach was very stony.

We found the start of the walk outside The New Inn and duly took photos before spending a very pleasant evening having dinner outside in the pub's garden. This would not have occurred during the past week due to the bitterly cold weather but as the afternoon progressed the sun came out and it almost felt warm. By the time we had dinner and a few drinks the sun was going down and it was a chilly walk home.

Tomorrow is a short walk of 11kms to get us into our stride and allow us more time to see Tenby where we will stay for the night.
